Welcome to Year Two. This is the end of the Key Stage One journey. In Year Two we aim to make the most of our learning in an enjoyable and purposeful way. Children work hard during this year to develop independent working skills, preparing them nicely for entering the juniors. We like to learn outdoors when we can, so you will find us outside whatever the weather. Raincoats and wellies at the ready!
Year Two are working on a variety of exciting and enterprising topics including: The Giant Paella, The Fire of London and The Calico Trail. Through these topics children have the opportunity to learn skills in all areas of the curriculum. Year Two is also the year that we are able to develop our acting skills in the Christmas Play.
Welcome back to another school year – we hope everyone enjoyed the summer break. We are looking forward to working with your children and helping them settle into their new class routines. The purpose of this letter is to let you know what the children will be learning between now and October half-term and to give you some general information about Year 2 and our class procedures.
Firstly, the teaching arrangements for this half term are as follows: Mrs McErlean will teach the class on Monday and Tuesday and Mrs Bowker will teach Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Mrs Keeling will be responsible for the class on a Friday afternoon to cover Planning, Preparation and Assessment (PPA) time. Mrs S Brooks will be working with us as teaching assistant on Monday to Friday.
This morning Year 2 were learnng to compare measures using the greater than, less than and equals signs. We also made sure we were using the correct vocabulary such as 'capacity' or 'millilitres'.
Reading scales can be quite tricky - perhaps you could practise in your kitchens at home!
Remember to provide woodland clothes and waterproofs every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. As you will be aware by now, we do go out in all weather conditions and the children do get very mucky indeed! We will happily store the clothes and wellies in school :)

We are continuing along our woodland journey and enjoying every minute. The children have now thoroughly explored the area discovering new flora and fauna, building dens and creating a rather mucky mud slide!
Today (Tuesday) we learned how to make fire using steel fire lighting flints. Some fires started easily and others took many, many attempts! Lily deserves an award for perseverence as she was still strinking sparks and trying to make fire long after everyone else had given up. She managed it in the end, however, and we all gave her a well-deserved clap.
A yummy marshmallow treat awaited us when we had succesfully created a small fire. Delicious!

Year 2 have started their woodland adventures and are really enjoying themselves. Everyday one of the first questions we get eagerly asked is "Are we going into the woods today?"
As well as having fun the children are working well together to create shelters, fairy dens, a bug hotel and we have even had a Lamborghini! It is also great to see new relationships developing. One afternoon, after spending a long time erecting a shelter with Annabel, Joe remarked 'you know I never usually work with girls but this is alright!' High praise indeed!

Tuesday 7th March
Today Year 2 enjoyed exploring the Calico Trail. The children learned a lot about the calico printing industry in Hayfield and how events from the past have shaped the village today.
Last term Year Two enjoyed a visit to Staircase House in Stockport.
The children learned a lot about life in 1666 and re-lived the events of the Great Fire through the medium of drama. There were dressing up clothes for everyone and the children took part as various characters including Samuel Pepys and his maid Jane.
In the afternoon there were more exciting activities to take part in. We made walls using wattle and daub, and then created cures for the plague doctor to treat his patients with!
This term, with Mrs McErlean, we are creating characters to write a Character Profile about. Look at this photograph showing the build up to our work! We chose equipment, made a model and then wrote adjectives to describe our character.
