7th September 2018
Welcome to Year Four! We hope you have had a fantastic summer. Just to confirm, your child is being taught by Ms K Grove on a Monday, Tuesday and the first part of Wednesday morning. Mrs S Goddard will teach on a Thursday and Friday. Mrs N Mills will be the Year 4 Teaching Assistant.
In English the first two units that we will cover this term are Stories with a Moral and Science-fiction.
In Mathematics we will follow the White Rose curriculum which will start with place value and addition and subtraction.
Our main topic focus as part of the Creative Curriculum will be ‘All about Australia.’ This will incorporate History, Geography, Science and Art.
Some subjects will stand alone as follows:
RE: Special Places
PE: PE/Swimming The class will be split into two groups. One group will go swimming this half term and the other next half term.
ICT: Skills to access the Year 4 curriculum
Music: Wider opportunities - drums
Please remember, everyone needs to have a complete indoor and outdoor PE kit in school at all times. Ensure all the kit is named, as unnamed t-shirts, black shorts and tracksuits are very difficult to identify. (The same is true for school sweatshirts, polo shirts, trousers, dresses and coats!) Also please make sure that if your child is swimming this half term that they have their swimming kit.
We would also just like to remind you that children only need to bring their school bag, post bag, reading bags/books and diaries to school each day (no pencil cases).
You should not bring any precious objects or money to school as these often get lost or cause confusion and upset.
We encourage the children to drink water at appropriate times during the day, so please send a fresh bottle of water in school each day. Please make sure that bottles are clearly named and have a sports top to avoid spillages.
Each week a math’s sheet will be sent home on a Monday. Please could you ensure that it is returned to school the following Monday. Similarly a spelling and SPAG homework will be sent home each Friday and will need to be returned the following Thursday. Finally, there is an optional topic homework which is not compulsory. This term it has been designed to improve the children’s knowledge with a Geographical/Environmental theme.
In Year 4, we would like your child to read at least 4 times a week at home to an adult. We are aware that some of the children are becoming more independent in their reading however, reading aloud is still essential in improving their pronunciation and fluency, whilst providing them with the opportunity to share and discuss the content of their books with you. In particular, it is important that they understand the vocabulary that they can now so easily decode. It is important that you sign each read in their diaries as they will be checked regularly. The children have been asked to sign their personal reads in pencil and we ask that you sign in pen.
We always appreciate extra adult help in the classroom, if you are able to help in any way, either on a regular or one-off basis, please let us know. Anyone helping in school does require DBS clearance. If you do not have this, please contact the office for a form to complete.
We would like to thank you in advance for the support that you will be giving your child with this homework and in co-operating with us to move their learning forwards. We look forward to a happy and successful year with you and your child. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries throughout the term. You can find us in the classroom after school most evenings, ring at lunchtime or leave a message with Mrs Lowe / Mrs Hallam.
