On the biggest day of football in 28 years, Hayfield Primary cricket team travelled to Denby for the Derbyshire county cricket finals.
Full of excitement the boys warmed up and looking at all the other teams knew there were in for a tough day. Of course it wasn’t going to be easy all the teams being their district winners with Hayfield proud to represent the High Peak.
Our first game was against Northfield Primary. The boys had a rocky start, they played ok but not their best, their nerves and excitement starting to get to them so that they weren’t on their best game mentally. They won but it wasn’t a classic. We regrouped and spoke about the importance is working together as a team, about the importance of respecting each other and supporting each other. With England football finally having a team we can be proud of, we looked at how they had achieved their accomplishments. By being friends who all believed in each other with a manager who believed in them all. With our new belief the team went on to win the next game comfortably setting up a semi final against St Thomas. This was a nerve wracking affair. Hayfield set out a good run total and now needed to field and bowl well. St Thomas were certainly capable of scoring runs and the boys held onto their nerves well as it came down to the last 3 balls with them requiring 10. Some excellent fielding and nerves of steel bowling meant Hayfield secured their final place with a win by 6 runs.
The final was against Brockwell a school significantly larger than Hayfield. Brockwell also having just beaten the Derby city champions a school 6 times bigger than us!
The final was a case of race against time as the clock was ticking to get the team ready for their performance of Mary Poppins that evening. The boys listened to what was asked and were now working together as a unit. Some excellent batting meant we put out a large run target for the opposition. Some early wickets meant this was never in danger and the final was a far less tense affair. Hayfield have become the Derbsyhire County Champions. This is a huge achievement for this group. Lots of important lessons learnt along the way but ultimately pulling together as a team and as friends to enjoy this incredible achievement. We may be a small village school on Derbsyhire but we are now most firmly recognised as one of the best cricketing schools. 4 successive years in the county finals, always qualifying for semis too and achieve in 3&4th places and now the county champions.
Well done to Jake, Shay, Alex, Zak, Jack C, Jack W, Oisin and Edward!
Back just in time for Mary Poppins and what a show that was. As for the other game that night? Well we finally have a team that we can be proud of and most importantly that the children can aspire to follow the believe model thy have created.
