What is a governor and what do we do?

School governing boards are responsible for working with the school to ensure that it delivers a good quality education to all children. Together with the Headteacher, who is responsible for day-to-day management, we set the school’s aims and policies.
Our key roles are to ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction; to hold the Headteacher

to account for the educational performance of the school and the performance management of staff; to oversee the financial performance of the school and make sure its money is well spent. 

Who are we?

Hayfield Governors are volunteers from all walks of life who work collectively to promote high standards within the school. Between us all, we have a wide variety of skills and experience and, by working as a team, we are able to carry out our increasingly wide range of responsibilities for the benefit of children, parents/guardians and staff. We all play an active role in supporting the school and you and your children will see us all in school on a regular basis (some more than others as some of our governors also work or volunteer in school!).

How do we work? 

The governing board meet regularly as a full team where they discuss whole school issues and oversee the work of each of the two committees that focus on key areas. Each governor is assigned a role in one of these committees, depending upon expertise and experience. 

Curriculum and Policy Committee (CAP) 

This group examines and agrees the curriculum and policies that the school follows to ensure that they meet current needs and are fit for purpose. It considers and comments on any action plans or specific subject developments which staff bring to it for attention or approval. Committee members regularly consider any actions needed in the field of safeguarding practice and help shape the school's improvement plan and statement of self- evaluation. Governors with subject lead link roles meet with key staff, visit classes and report on activities they see. Governors' expertise includes experience in educational settings, special educational needs and safeguarding, amongst others.


Finance and Premises Committee (FAP) 

This committee oversees the school’s budget and how money is spent, ensuring that the education provided by the school shows ‘value for money’ within the constraints of the available budget. It also ensures that the premises are fit for purpose and that they meet all of the numerous health and safety requirements. This committee considers all maintenance and improvements to the school site that require a high level of capital funding. It also oversees the school website. The team has a range of experience including governors who have financial / business experience and those who are trained in architecture and planning.

How can you be involved? 

Would you like more information about becoming a governor yourself? We are continually planning for the future and would welcome your interest in joining our team. You don’t have to be an expert in education to be a governor – you just have to have a genuine interest in getting the very best for children at Hayfield Primary School. Some of our governors are parents of children currently at Hayfield, but we also have governors who come from within the wider community and realise that they have just as much to offer. One of the great things about our Governing Board is the range of skills, knowledge and experience that we offer collectively. However, we would really like to develop our skill-set further and we always welcome interest. 

Being a governor doesn’t mean a huge workload: we usually meet once every half-term as a Full Governing Board and each committee (the Finance committee and the Curriculum committee) meets once a half-term too. Training and support is provided to help you settle in to the role and other governors are always available to support you too. It’s a very rewarding role and most governors find that they get just as much out of it as they put into it!
